Borondo

Gonzalo Borondo was born in Valladolid (ES) in 1989. Since 2007, he has developed his works in public spaces, elaborating an original idiom of painting and installations closely tied to the sites of his efforts. His art arises from a dialogue with the surrounding context, an ongoing exchange with the memories of the site and the perceptions of its space, both physical and symbolic. The underlying aim of his artistic experimentation is to extend the possibilities of painting into other disciplines (theatre, video-art), supports (glass, straw, walls, ceramics, wood…), and multiple aesthetic techniques (stone engraving, silk-screening). Borondo explores the idioms of the past, recasting them in a contemporary light through a new and innovative approach to tradition.  His contemplation of the sacred, of the conflicts inherent in the pairing of man and nature, serves as the cornerstone of his poetics, which he uses to break these elements down, in the course of the creative act, into their most ancestral, instinctive forms, bringing forth a perpetual essence. The artist’s interest in working in public places, in exploring the relationship between art and life, has led him to develop site-specific projects in non-conventional settings, works whose impact on the general public, as both installations and experiences, has been intense. Borondo creates public works of art on an international level. Since 2012 he has held one-man shows in museums, galleries, and other venues in Italy, Spain, France, and England. His latest projects include “Insurrecta” (Segovia, ES, 2020), “Merci” (Temple des Chartrones, Bordeaux, FR, 2019), “Sacrilége” (an opera recital at the Toursky Theatre, Bordeaux, FR, 2018), “Matiére Noire” (the flea market in Marseilles, FR, 2017), “Non-Plus Ultra” (MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, IT, 2018) and “Cenere” (the cemetery chapel, Selci, IT, 2017).

Tresoldi

Edoardo Tresoldi explores the poetics of the dialogue between human beings and the landscape, using the language of architecture as an expressive tool and as a key to reading space. The artist plays with the transparency of wire mesh to transcend the spatiotemporal dimension and narrate a dialogue between art and the world, a visual synthesis revealed in the fading of the physical boundaries of his works. Born in Milan, Tresoldi moved to Rome after art school, working in the fields of sculpture, stage design, and the cinema, where he developed a heterogeneous approach to the arts. The sculptor recognized the contrasts of the contemporary landscape as his Genius Loci and identified the cross-fertilization of ideas and influences as the founding principle of his work. Since 2013 he has produced installations in public spaces, archaeological sites, festivals, and exhibitions around the world. In 2016, in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Culture, he realized a work for the archaeological site of the Early Christian basilica of Siponto, a unique convergence between contemporary art and archaeology that was awarded the Gold Medal for Italian Architecture. In 2018 the artist produced Etherea for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the USA. In 2019 he presented Simbiosi in the prestigious context of Arte Sella and founded STUDIO STUDIO STUDIO, an interdisciplinary lab that supports artists, public art projects, and contemporary art production. In 2020 he inaugurated a permanent installation called Opera in Reggio Calabria, Italy.

The reflections behind the “Fundamenta I” series are the basis for the “Fundamenta II” series, which is born from the synergy between Gonzalo Borondo and Edoardo Tresoldi.

Borondo begins to work on his production elaborating both graphically and conceptually the considerations about the column as an element of connection between man and nature and, as if it were a sign of that connection he is looking for, he runs into a work made by Edoardo Tresoldi in our laboratory, in a collaboration with 56Fili.

Thus was born a spontaneous and unexpected interaction that finds its reason to exist in the dialogue between visions, approaches, and poetics that at a first glance are opposed to each other, but which find their common root in the last encounter between man, nature, and sacredness.

The column screen-printed by Tresoldi together with 56Fili, which transport on paper the compositions created for the installation “Opera” on the seafront of Reggio Calabria, tell of an ethereal, light element that soars upwards, aiming at the sphere of the sacred in which it tends to disappear.

That element that feeds the entire poetic of Tresoldi, which tells us about the absent matter, emptying the architecture from its physical mass and transforming it into pure language, able to merge with the elements of the landscape and seek contact between man-made space and natural space.

Borondo inserts himself into this imagery with a pictorial and instinctive gesture, depicting an equal and opposite drive, i.e. the site that holds the column anchored to the ground, which keeps it tied to the organic, material, and mutable sphere that generates life.

Once again, in the juxtaposition of elements that are so radically different, it finds the answer to how to start a new path of reconnection and dialogue, which can bring people back to their rightful place in the order of things.
